A chronically ill child had to be carried 850 metres after a day in Christchurch Hospital when the regular shuttle service did not appear.

Four-year-old Devyn Fortune had been at the hospital since 8.30am getting medical tests when they tried to leave about 4pm on Wednesday, her mother Rachel Fortune said.

She said they waited for about half an hour for the shuttle to come to take them back to their car parked at the Lichfield St parking building, but it did not arrive.

Devyn Fortune could not walk to the car as she had had intravenous lines put into her feet as part of the testing.

Canterbury District Health Board commercial portfolio manager Rachel Cadle said the hospital shuttle service was operating as it normally would under alert level 3 on Wednesday.

Cadle said the shuttle had been running at limited capacity since April 28 to adhere to level 3 restrictions.
